A sophisticated tunnel presumably constructed by smugglers to transport illicit drugs has been found under the US and Mexico border.

The discovery of the elaborate tunnel that extends 48 feet in the United States and 35 feet in Mexico has caught by surprise authorities on both sides of the border.

"This is one of the most elaborate tunnels I've seen," Border Patrol agent Michael Scioli told CNN on Thursday.

The half-built narcotunnel which contains side walls and wooden studs and ceiling construction, was found by border patrol agents last week.

"It's elegant in the sense it has electrical work wired into the Mexico side. It even has a hose for ventilation and lightning," Scioli said.

The discovery followed the arrests of two people last week who were caught digging a hole in the floor of a Nogales building in Arizona. Agents went to the site after someone reported hearing construction activity inside.
