An entire football team of Africans is on the run from French immigration officials after vanishing without trace.
They disappeared from their hotel in Le Havre, on the Channel coast, during a friendly tournament designed to foster 'international cooperation and harmony'.
The players, who are from the west African state of Senegal, are likely to want to claim asylum or else disappear into the black economy.
'They were due to fly home to Africa on Sunday, but haven’t been seen since leaving their hotel,' said one officer from the French frontier police.
'Three disappeared when the team was playing in Portugal, while another nine disappeared this time round. Unfortunately this kind of thing is relatively common with African teams coming to Europe.'
It is possible that the missing footballers could have headed to England – just a short ferry trip from the northern France port – although all are French speakers and are more likely to stay on the other side of the Channel, said police.
